My mother used to let me use her treadel machine. She would let me do whatever I wanted on it.

My mother let me play with her treadle sewing machine. She gave me scraps of fabric and let me do whatever I wanted. If I asked for help she was there otherwise I just sewed. She could alter, tailor, quilt, machine and hand embroider, anything she wanted to do on this machine. She made her own patterns and sewed for others. I have always appreciated this gift she gave to me. She would be amazed at the new Bernina I just purchased this year.

I started learning to sew at age 5 because I was being a pest while my moter was making my clothes to wear to kindergarden. That was 69 years ago. Since them I have sewed almost everything except shoes, and lots of alterations as well as creating patterns when needed.

  5. Sharon Webb says:

My grandmother was the first person to teach me to sew. I learned on her old Singer treadle machine. She was loving, kind, and patient. She took me with her to fabric and yarn stores which was always a treat.

I took sewing in high school and later some sewing courses in junior college while my husband was in Vietnam.

My Mother taught me to sew when I was about 7. She even let me use her electric sewing machine. I still have some of the doll clothes I made and all my dolls. I made my first dress at age 10 as a Girl Scout project out of a plaid Dan River fabric. Still have that, too.

  7. Sharon G says:

My mom. She had me sitting in the floor next to her treadle machine threading buttons, spools & scraps on yarn with a big yarn needle very, very early in my life. I have loved the magic of fabric & making things from it for as long as I can remember.

  8. Cindy says:

My grandmother was my inspiration though she didn’t teach me how to sew. My first sewing experience was in home economics class in high school. I love taking a flat piece of fabric and making something beautiful and/or functional out of it.
