The flap pocket is fully lined.

For a little more security, the bag also features a zippered pocket. Both pockets are on the outside of the bag, so easy access. There are no pockets on the inside of the bag.

The recommended fabric for this bag is quilting cotton. With all the wonderful prints that are available to choose from, you can truly make a bag that is unique and special. Other possible choices for the exterior of the bag are lightweight pliable fabrics like linen or pinwale corduroy. The only fabric that is suggested for the lining is cotton. If you would like to accent your bag with leather or suede, be sure that either of these are lightweight.

Quite a bit of hardware is required to make the bag.

You will need:

2 each-1 1/4″ wide D-rings

2 each-1″ wide metal snap hooks

4 each- 1 1/4″ wide O-rings

2 each-1″ wide slide buckles

For the Cross-Body option you will also need:

2 each-1″ wide D-rings

2 more-1″wide metal snap hooks

The hardware can be found at your local chain fabric store, or ordered directly from Studio Kat Designs. You can find everything you will need for the bag HERE on her notions page.

Rather than make the straps with the recommended cotton webbing, I opted to make my straps out of woven belting. Worked beautifully.

The bag is interlined with fusible fleece which can be found at your local chain fabric store. The recommended fleece is Thermolam by Pellon. You will need 1/2 yard.

If you would like to make the piece pocket that is featured on the cover of the pattern, you will find it as a free download HERE. If you would also like to accent the pocket flap with the pieced trim, you can find that pattern HERE. Anyone who enjoys doing pieced work will especially love the challenge of the pieced pocket.

The interior of the bag is quite roomy and features a zippered closure. Perfect for security. The interior of the bag is large enough to carry just about anything you might need throughout the day as well as your I-Pad!

The bag looks as though it would be rather complicated to construct, but the step by step instructions are quite easy to follow. There are a couple of areas where extra attention needs to be paid to the construction process, but we will walk step by step through these areas.

The back pocket goes together in a snap thanks to the 3-piece panel construction of the back. The center panel is actually 2 pieces, so no tricky inserting of the zipper. Once the zipper has been attached and the pocket constructed, the 2 side panels are attached.

Another wonderful option that can be found on the Studio Kat website is in color pictorial guides. Between the Sew News sew along, and all of the extra help that is provided on the website, you will surely walk away with a bag that you can be proud of.

If by chance you have not purchased your pattern, you can order the pattern HERE.

Great style, so many options and step by step instructions combine to make the Cosmo Convertible Bag a must have bag pattern! Once you’ve made your own, beware, as all your friends and family will want one as well.

So grab your supplies! In our next post we will be cutting out the pattern, inserting the zippered pocket and interfacing the bag.

Until next time…

In the bag example shown here and in the Sew News Magazine, the sides of the bag back and the pocket are shown in contrast fabric. Did you need to buy additional contrast fabric in order to do this? Thanks!
