I spent a good bit of time last year making wardrobe basics, particularly tees and tanks. However, I managed to sneak in a few skirts, including an Anya Skirt in yarn-dyed linen. If you’re looking for a great basic circle skirt pattern, I can’t recommend this one enough. Out of the box (i.e. no fit adjustments), the waistband was a perfect fit. The fabric is lovely, too: it’s a thick linen that can take on the look of denim or wool, depending on what you pair it with – and you can literally pair it with anything. And it was an easy sew. I skipped turning that long curved edge by binding the edge with pre-made bias tape, the perfect stash buster!
So yay, another great basic pattern and make to wear! But, I’ve found that I’m not wearing the skirt as much as I thought I would. And I know exactly why: I don’t know how to style it. Hence this post! I turned to the amazingly fashionable folks on Pinterest for ideas…and got some good ones. Here are some styling tips I gathered for circle skirts:
Pair with a snug top, tucked in. A basic button-up, snug turtleneck or knit top will do here, but the key is the close fit and the tucked shirt tails. I’m probably not likely to go the cropped mid-riff route, but darn, it does look nice.
Pair with a silky blouse with vintage accents. If you’re not up for tucking in the whole blouse, tuck in the front.
Pair with a cardigan and simple top. I’m a cardigan gal, so this is my favorite. Kind of an instant vintage look.
Pair with heels. They’re not my favorite, but they elongate the leg which is helpful with a full midi-length skirt. If not full-on heels, try something with a little lift and/or a pointed tow.
Add a belt. Accentuate the waistline with a thin belt for added definition.
Try tights! I love a full circle skirt for summer, but with a cardigan and tights for winter – yes! Even better, try some sweater knit tights for a more vintage look.
